Surface Pattern: New York

This is my first surface pattern from my New York sketchbook, and I feel like this book has much more material in it for me to use, so I shall certainly keep you posted. Right now, I'm back home and have been for a week, and so I suppose with seeing people everyday, and keeping up with the family, and going to work, University work and these projects have been put on the side a little... I'm planning some epic stuff though, so it should start up again soon! In the meantime, I mean to go to some of our galleries anyway, there's some amazing stuff on at the moment, and I've barely been to any exhibitions in the last few months.... terrible I know. I will certainly keep you up on those! Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to you all.

Follow me on Tumblr!

So I've been um-ing and ah-ing about starting up a Tumblr specifically for my own work, and finally decided that it might just be crucial to gaining a bigger audience! I am a little wary, but hopefully it all pays off! If you guys are regular Tumblr users, I'd truly appreciate it if you followed me, and don't worry, I'll still be updating this blog just as regularly! I just want to use it as a click-through process for this blog, and hopefully widen my audience even further! Thankyou all so much for taking the time to read this blog, I can't express how much it means to me when people tell me they're enjoying what I'm doing... *cry* and here it is!

Surface Pattern Projects: Water lilies.

In this last week, we've not been given any projects as yet, so I've been working on a couple of things that I want to keep in my system. I'm trying desperately hard to keep doing things on my own, without needing the approval of tutors, because I find that I usually feel the need to have recognition for my work...not always a great habit to have! I also need to work on my editing, and besides, I've been missing surface pattern!

Taken from my sketchbook that I took to China, I used the water lilies pages to come up with this!

I'm really happy with it, for once it's something that flows! The dappled parts are splashes of ink too, I felt like the pattern needed something else to give it a new lease of life. I plan to get these printed at some point onto fabric, I think this is crying out to be a long dress or a scarf or something sheer. I have  lot of plans for these surface patterns that I'm going to be making, so I'll certainly keep you all posted!

Kingston University: Rubber Stamps

Second of the three workshops was with our tutor from location drawing, Stephen! It was really so much fun, and I decided on making a zine about burgers.

I really enjoyed making this zine, I may make a few more food related zines next week while I have so much time off waiting for my feedback! Would you guys be interested in buying this?

Kingston University: Zines Day

This weeks set of workshops are pretty awesome. First for me was making a zine, and our group did a pretty good job of coming up with something quite abstract  and interactive over something particularly illustrative. We were given the theme Over and Under, and we decided to base it around playground games.

I was in a group with Alice-Mae, Rachael, Henry and Bekah, and we all assigned ourselves different pages. I chose to do the Stuck in the Mud section, which although was grueling, I feel like it looked pretty nice in the end.

Kingston University: Poetic Objectic.

Last week's project was a group one, so Hannah Caney and I joined forces to create this little collection of photos. We both were interested in the theme of garments, firstly from shoes and hats...but we quickly moved on to socks and tights, interested in taking away their uses by immobilising them. We put some nude tights through a sewing machine, and Hannah bravely modeled them for us (This is a corridor at University might I add...). The pictures were perfect, no photoshop required. We chose eight photos to go into a lookbook.

We're pretty interested in making this into a zine, so if you're interested, feel free to let us know!

Kingston University: Brave New World.

Our last project was the longest one we've had so far, using the House of Illustration competition brief. Basically, we were challenged to illustrate 3 scenes and the cover for Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, with the hopeful intention of submitting it eventually. Check out the brief here.

After finishing the project though, I decided against submitting, so I'm going to just post it on here and see what you guys think... Maybe it's worth a try? I'm not sure though, it's definitely not my best work so far, but I feel like I really challenged myself, which is what all of this is all about right?

Ok, so here they are:

So if you've read Brave New World, you might have a good idea where these scenes occur... The first is the cover. I started with the religious connotations that the book includes, and a lot of the characters hold reference to Biblical characters too. That's when I got onto glass and frescos, but I really struggled with actually getting to these designs. Three weeks is not long at all in the grand scheme of things! The hardest part was actually photographing the pieces, and I'm only really happy with the cover. Funnily enough, it was the last image I made.

The set didn't go down too well in the critique, but I think I quite liked how they turned out. I'm not sure how well they work as book images though, so I doubt I'll submit these in at all. It was an experience working with glass, and although I'd like to do some more in the future, I won't be doing so much soon... I need all my cuts to heal first! It does make me incredibly interested in trying out 3D mediums though, particularly ceramics... It must be in my blood, seeing as my auntie does a lot of ceramics too! Hopefully I'll be able to feature her work up here soon too.

Kingston University: Drawing Day 11, Life Drawing, Andrea

From my second session in the life room... Funnily enough, despite what I'd said about male and female life drawing in my last post, I found it a lot more difficult. I was only truly happy with the last drawing. We were told to bring in sketchbooks, and Noel seemed to like them enough... But I really am loving doing life drawing again. We're to bring a couple of portraits next week, either self or somebody else, which is totally my cup of tea! It's now just deciding who I want to draw...

FRIENDS: Katie, Will, Hannah

On the request of William. Sorry, I completely forgot to blog about these when I did them!

Kingston University: Drawing Day 10, Life Drawing, Henry

These are from my first life drawing session. I was really excited to do it again, I'd always loved life drawing at Foundation. As soon as I saw I was drawing a man though, I got a little nervous. I think that it's more difficult to draw men, because the subtlety in the muscles is what makes the bodies different to that of a woman. I think with women you can get away with being slightly out...? Is that just me? Anyhow, in the end, I was pretty happy with some of the piece I came out with, particularly the faster drawings, and the longest drawings at about an hour. The in between ones were perhaps my weaker ones, I think because there's an element of both speed and careful observation.
